In Summation’s graded stakes winner Calculator made a triumphant return to the races on Saturday at Santa Anita Park with a game neck victory in a seven-furlong allowance contest, his first race in some 13 months, when he won the Sham S. (G3) by 4 ¼-lengths.

Four-year-old Calculator was away last in the nine-horse field and raced well off the rail down the backstretch, but steadily picked up the pace after a quarter-mile, making a bold, four-wide move on the turn to go from last to first by the time the field hit the stretch. A hard-trying Fusaichi Samurai fought for the lead for the length of the stretch, but Calculator was too tough, winning by a neck in 1:22.84 (VIDEO).

Calculator was one of the most promising 2-year-old of 2014, running second to champion American Pharoah in both the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and FrontRunner S. (G1) before breaking his maiden in the Sham.

With Saturday’s win, Calculator is 2-2-1 in six starts and has earned $228,300. The gray colt is out of Back to Basics, a sister to three stakes winners. Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Calculator sold for $132,000 to trainer Peter Miller at the 2014 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale.

In Summation was Florida’s leading Third-Crop sire of 2015 and has already accounted for nine winners this year, including Gasparilla S. winner R Girls a Charmer and the stakes-placed Summation Time.
